Using Multimedia on the Web

Image Formats:

GIF (pronounced "jiff") - Graphics Interchange Format

  • Supports only 8-bit color (256 colors)
  • Best for line art, logos, inline images, and screen captures with mostly solid colors, little or no shading, few different colors
  • Supports interlacing, transparency, and animation (GIF89a)

JPEG  (pronounced "jay-peg") - Joint Photographic Experts Group

  • Lossless - can be edited and re-edited without image degradation
  • Best for photographic images with many colors

PNG (pronounced "ping") - Portable Network Graphics

  •  New to the Web; may not yet be supported by all browsers
